북미 인디언의 양육방식 고찰

A Review of Child Rearing Practices from a North American Indian Perspective

본 연구는 오늘날의 생태계 위기를 극복하기 위한 교육적 접근의 한 방안으로 북미 인디언의 세계관, 인간관, 아동관 및 양육방식을 살펴봄으로써 그 유아교육적 시사점을 도출해보고자 하는 목적으로 실시되었다. 이를 위해 국내외에 소개된 북미 인디언 관련 서적과 연구물 등에 나타난 연설문이나 말, 노래, 이야기 등을 연구대상으로 하여 분석하였다. 연구결과, 북미 인디언은 세상의 모든 존재는 연결되어 있기 때문에 상호 의존하며 살아야 한다는 세계관을 바탕으로, 인간은 자연의 일부이며, 아동은 자연과 가장 닮은 존재로 인식하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 북미 인디언은 아이들의 양육은 자연으로부터 조상으로부터 놀이와 이야기를 통해 하고자 했음을 알 수 있었다. 북미 인디언의 양육방식은 유아교육의 방향을 실내 중심, 지식 중심의 유아교육에서 자연 체험 중심의, 놀이 중심의 유아교육으로 잡아가는 단초로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

This research examines North American Indians views on the world, human nature, children and child rearing as part of an educational approach to overcoming the risks facing the world today, and as a result, aims to provide new insight into early childhood education. To this end, various North American Indian folktales, music, languages, and speeches featured and recorded in related books and research studies were analyzed. Based on the results, it was concluded that North American Indians espouse a unique worldview predicated on the interconnectedness of all beings and the necessity of interdependency and perceive childhood as resembling nature of which human beings are part. By upholding these perceptions, North American Indians emphasize the practice of educating children by storytelling and encouraging outdoor activity. The North American Indian case of early childhood education provides support for a parenting method centered on hands-on experiments and activities surrounded by nature and away from heavy knowledge attainment in indoor environments.
