A Study on Characterization by Sound in Animation

본 연구는 애니메이션에서 캐릭터의 특성과 성격의 형성을 위하여 사운드에 의한 캐릭터화의 새로운 가능성을 탐구하였다. 이러한 연구목적을 위하여 픽사 애니메이션 스튜디오의 단편 애니메이션 ‘Lou’의 캐릭터 음향 분석을 통하여 애니메이션 사운드의 새로운 기능과 역할을 고찰하였다. ‘Lou’의 주인공 캐릭터 Lou에 부여된 음향효과는 캐릭터의 정서 및 활동을 표현하였는데, 특히 정서를 표현하는 음향효과는 소리에 의한 캐릭터화에 중요한 역할을 하였다. 원래 보이지 않는 존재를 있는 것처럼 보여주는 Lou의 허상적 표현, 이 작품의 스토리에서 또 다른 주인공 캐릭터인 J.J.의 관점에서 Lou가 어떠한 환상으로 표현되는 점, 그리고 Lou가 실존하는 것이 사실인지의 여부가 불분명하기 때문에 그가 가상적인 캐릭터화가 되는 점은 이 작품에 나타난 사운드에 의한 캐릭터화의 새로운 가능성들로 해석되었다. 또한 이 작품에 구체적인 내용을 의미하는 대사가 거의 없는 가운데, Lou의 음향효과는 그의 대사 음성과 같은 역할을 수행하여 음향효과의 외연화를 실현한다. 그리고 이 작품에 나타난 Lou의 음향효과는 보이는 음향과 아쿠스메트르가 양립하는 해석을 가능하게 하여 음향에 의한 복합성을 나타낸다. 이와 같이 본 연구에서 애니메이션 캐릭터의 음향효과는 대사와 같은 역할을 수행하고, 허상, 환상, 가상, 외연, 아쿠스메트르 등을 복합적으로 표현함으로서 새로운 방법으로 사운드에 의한 캐릭터화를 실현하였다. 그러므로 본 연구의 결과는 보다 새로운 관점으로 애니메이션 캐릭터를 창조하는데 있어서 음향의 역할과 기능이 더 확대될 수 있는 가능성을 열어주었다.

This study explored the new possibility of characterization by sound for the formation of the characteristics and personality of chracter in animation. For the purpose of this study, new functions and roles of animation sound were considered through character sound analysis of the short animation Lou of Pixar Animation Studios. The sound effects given to Lou, the main character of the animation ‘Lou’, expressed the character’s emotions and activities. In particular, the sound effects expressing emotions played an important role in characterizing the character through sound. In this animation, it appears that Lou s illusional representation of an invisible being as if it were there, Lou is expressed as a fantasy from the perspective of J.J., another main character in the story of this animation. and as it is unclear whether Lou is real or not, he becomes a virtual character. According to such phenomenons, it was possible to analytically consider new possibilities of characterization by sound in this animation. Also, while there are very few lines in this animation that mean specific contents, Lou s sound effects play the same role as his dialogue voices, realizing the extension of the sound effects. And the sound effects of Lou shown in this animation show the complexity by sound with enabling a compatible interpretation of visible sound and Acousmêtre. As such, in this study, sound effects of animation character play the same role as dialogues, and by expressing illusion, fantasy, virtuality, extension, and Acousmêtre complexly, characterization by sound was realized in a new method. Therefore, the results of this study opened the possibility that the roles and functions of sound could be further expanded in creating animation characters from a new perspective.
