민주시민교육에서 필리아의 의미

The Meaning of Philia in Democratic Citizenship Education

배움의 공동체로서의 학교는 배움이라는 공통된 목적을 공유하며 운영되지만, 그 과정에서 구성원 간의 배려와 협력 등 필리아적 만남이 결여된다면 진정한 배움의 공동체라고 할 수 없다. 성장은 자신을 타인에게 노출시키고 받아들이는 만남의 과정을 통해 이루어진다. 교육은 결국 사람과 사람의 교류이자 만남이다. 단순히 지식을 주고받는 수동적인 관계가 아니라 그것을 함께 재해석하고 재창조하는 능동적이고 주체적인 교육관계이다. 아리스토텔레스는 필리아(philia)를 최선의 탁월성으로 설정하고 인간에게 필요한 덕목으로 시민 우애 인 필리아를 강조했다. 시민들은 필리아를 통해 탁월성을 나누며 함께 살아간다. 즉, 민주시민교육을 위해 필수적인 우애 형성의 중요 요소로서 필리아의 동등성 , 시민 결속 , 사유의 공유와 성찰 과 같은 특징을 통해 인간은 정치적 동물이라는 본성에 따라서 시민의 삶을 영위하게 되는 것이다. 동등성, 시민 결속, 사유의 공유와 성찰이라는 개념들은 오늘날의 공화민주주의, 참여민주주의, 심의민주주의에 영향을 주었다. 필리아를 단순히 철학적 개념이 아닌, 삶의 자세로서 받아들이고 추구하는 민주시민교육은 사회를 경쟁의 장소가 아닌 학습공동체의 장으로서 탈바꿈하는 데에 도움을 줄 뿐 아니라, 이러한 필리아의 개념은 오늘날 더욱 활발히 진행되어가는 대한민국의 민주시민교육에 교육적 의미를 더해줄 수 있다.

A school as a learning community is operated while sharing a common purpose of learning, but if the management process lacks philia-like encounters such as consideration and cooperation among citizen, it cannot be called a true learning ‘community’. Education occurs through encounters in which oneself is exposed to others and takes on. Education is meeting. It is not a passive relationship that transmits and receives knowledge, but an active and subjective educational relationship that reinterprets and recreates it together. Aristotle set philia as the highest excellence, emphasizing ‘citizen-friendship’ as a virtue necessary for humans. Through citizenfriendship, citizens live together while sharing excellence. Features such as ‘equality’, ‘citizen solidarity’ and ‘share and review of thoughts’ of philia can add its educational meaning to today s democratic citizenship education. Democratic citizenship education that pursues philia as a way of life, not a philosophical concept, helps transform society as a learning community rather than a place of competition. This concept of philia can add educational significance to the democratic citizenship education in Korea, which is being conducted more actively today.
