Analyzing Types of Toys in the Play Therapy Process According to the Children’s Problem Behavior Types and Gender

This study aims to analyzes the change in the types of toys during the entire play therapy process according to the child’s problem behavior type and gender and provide objective data for understanding the play therapy for children. A total of 83 children-21 boys with internalizing problem behavior, 26 girls with internalizing problem behavior, 27 boys with externalizing problem behavior, and 9 girls with externalizing problem behavior-were selected as the final subjects of this study. 1,899 session, which were the entire sessions used for the study, 12,553 toys were used for the final analysis. The findings are as follows. In the types of toys, the difference according to the problem behavior type showed the greatest difference in the scary/aggressive toys. Differences according to gender were found in expressive toys. In the entire process, girls chose and played the Family/nurturing toys and boys chose the pretend/imaginary toys the most. These two types of toys showed different patterns of change according to gender during the entire process of play therapy. Through the above study results, it was possible to examine the differences in children’s toy types according to problem behavior types and gender, and the changes in play accordingly and provide objective data for understanding the play therapy for children.
