This study aimed to investigate the relations between mother s attitude toward children s emotional expressiveness and their self-regulation. The subjects were 148 children aged from four to five and their mothers residing in Busan and Kimhae provinces. Instruments for the Assessment were the Self-Regulation Rating Scale(Kendall & Wilcox, 1979) and Parent Attitude toward Children s Expressiveness Scale(Saarni, 1990). The data were analyzed, using the descriptive statistics, Cronbach s α, Pearson s correlations, and two-way ANOVAs. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, children s self-regulation was higher in girls than in boys, specially in regard to attention keeping. But there was no significant differences according to the age or birth order. Secondly, there was no significant differences in mother s attitudes toward children s emotional expressiveness according to the mother s education, employment, and family income. Thirdly, the more acceptive the mother s attitude was toward her child s negative emotional expressiveness (sorrow, fear, anxiety except aggression), the higher the child s self-control appeared. Also, the more restrictively the mother regulated her child s aversive expressions, the more attention the child exhibited. However, generally, mothers attitude toward children s emotional expression had no relation to children s self-regulation.
