The Improvement of Training Curricula to Enhance the Professionalism of Childcare Teachers

In the face of recent heated discussions on the betterment of the quality of childcare services and on the related policies, the enhancement of the professionalism of childcare teachers is first and foremost important element in boosting the quality of childcare. The purpose of this study was to examine the ways in which training curricula were improved in an attempt to strengthen the professionalism. By exploring current state of their training curricula in Korea, this study sought to discuss about some impending issues and to redress them. Also, previous literature on the strength and weakness of the training curricula in Korea and other advanced countries was investigated, and the collected data were analyzed. As a result, there appeared several ways to reinforce the professionalism. First, a wide variety of the training curricula is to be prepared to further specialize their roles. Secondly, the improvement of courses is required to level-up the professionalism. Thirdly, hands-on eaching experiences are needed to be stressed to expedite the development of the professionalism. Fourthly, more reinforced in-service education for them is in order. Fifthly, the provision of additional childcare personnels and the reinforcement of the personnel management system are required. The limitations of this study and the directions of future research were discussed.
