The Effects of Story telling Activities Based on Fairy Tales on the Promotion of Young Children s Story Construction and Vocabulary Abilities

The study investigated how the story telling activities based on fairy tales affected young Korean children s story construction and vocabulary competency. The subjects consisted of 40 five-year-olds (20 were assigned to both experimental and control groups) from two classes of the S kindergarten located in G city. The subjects of the experimental group participated in story telling activities using fairy tales while those of the control group participated in drawing activities using the same fairy tales twice or three times a week for six weeks. The data from pre- and post- tests of experimental and control groups were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program. The results of the study were as below. Firstly, the experimental group-participants obtained significantly higher scores in story-construction-ability test than did the control group-participants. Secondly, the experimented participants scored significantly higher in vocabulary-ability test than did the controlled participants.
