Effects of Personal, Family, and School Variables on School Adjustment among Elementary School and Middle School Students

This study assessed the effects of child s and teenager s personal, family, school-variables on their school adjustment, using the second wave Dara of KCYPS (the Korean Child-Youth Panel Survey). The participants included 2,232 second-graders and 2,157 5th-graders in elementary schools and 1,613 middle-school 2nd grade students. Findings are as follows: first, significant variables which contrilbuted to explanation of elementary school 2nd grade students school adjustment included sex, health states, concentration, parents marital status, neglects, and abuse, and students academic achievements. Second, elementary school 5th grade students sex, life satisfaction, self-esteem, time amount of computer games, multi-cultural family, parents neglects, peer attachment, and academic achievement significancy effected on their school adjustment. Finally, middle school juniors sex, height, concentration, aggression, physical symptoms, depression, time amount of computer games, parents monitoring, neglects, and abuse, students academic achievements and time amount of exercise at schools were significant variables which explained their school adjustment. The findings suggest that the developmental stages or age differences should be taken into account in the investigation of diversified predictors of students school adjustment
