Social distance towards people with the intellectual disability amongst Korean university students

Korean university students social distancing towards the intellectually disabled was investigated in respect to the three sub-dimensions of social distance: surface, interactional, and close relationships. Data were collected from 347 university students in Kyungnam, Korea and analyzed using t-test and one-way ANOVA. Their social distance scores were rated higher in the order of surface, interactional, and close relationships. Results indicated that their social distance scores differed by their socio-demographic backgrounds and past encounter experiences with the intellectually disabled. The results are expected to provide fundamental understanding of the social distancing toward the intellectually disabled amongst Korean university students and be applied as a primary guideline to legislate for the reduction of the social distance in Korea.
