The language of maternal control and teacher-child relationship affecting the development of social competence in young children

This study has been conducted to elucidate the factors influencing the social competence of 222 children residing in Seoul and Gyonggi provinces. The scales of mother s language-control styles, student-teacher relationships, and children s social competence were all employed. Data were analyzed by t-tests and stepwise regression. The results indicated that, sex and age differences were found in children s social competence. The strongest predictor of the social competence was the teacher-child relationship. The result implies the essence of teachers roles in the childcare provided in early educational institutions and suggests an impending need to considered them in future steps for improving social competence in young children.
