Effects of Young Child s Attachment to Mother and Teacher on Peer Acceptance and Peer Play Behaviors

  • 9

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of young children s attachment to their mothers and daycare teachers on their levels of peer acceptance and interactive play behaviors. The subjects consisted of 187 children aged four years, their mothers, and their teachers recruited from 13 childcare centers in Seoul city and Gyeonggi province. Instruments included Peer Rating Scale(Asher, Singleton, Tinsley, & Hymel, 1979), the Korean version of Pen Interactive Peer Play Scale(Choi & Shin, 2009), the revised version of Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment(Armsden & Greenberg, 1987), and the modified version of Q-set(Waters & Dean, 1985). The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. The results showed that young children s attachment to teachers was significantly related to peer acceptance. In addition, their attachment to both mothers and teachers significantly affected their interactive play behaviors with peers.
