Communicating, problem solving and self-directed learning abilities in Korean undergraduates

The purpose of this study is to examine communicating, problem-solving, and self-directed learning abilities in undergraduates at Jeju University in Korea. The total of 341 subjects (188 males and 153 females) were recruited from diverse major fields. Statistical methods of ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were employed. Results indicated significant differences by the major and sex: the undergraduates majoring in fields of social science generally scored higher levels in the abilities, and female-undergraduates scored higher than male-undergraduates on the average. Additionally, the sub-factors of each ability significantly explained the variance of other abilities. Conclusively, in the light of the inter-relatedness among above abilities, both the acquisition of advanced knowledge and the cultivation of life skills are warranted to be incorporated into university curriculum as a part of elementary education.
