Life Satisfaction of First Year Korean University Students: In Relation to Self-Esteem and Self-Efficacy

The life satisfaction of freshmen students at a university in Korea was examined, having self-esteem and self-efficacy as correlates. The participants were 207 first year students attending a university located in the southern province of Chungcheong-do. Instruments employed included Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (10 items; Rosenberg(1965, cited in Song Yon cho, Hyewon Kim, Min Kim, 2011), Kim’s Self-efficacy Scale (24 items; Ahyoung Kim, 1997), and Diener’s Satisfaction with Life Scale; Diener, Emmons, Larsen & Griffin(1985, cited in Song Yon cho, Hyewon Kim, Min Kim, 2011). Collected data were analysed by t-test, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows: First, there was a significant sex difference in self-esteem: The self-esteem scores of male freshmen students were higher than those of female freshmen students. Second, the self-esteem and self-efficacy variables explained 4.8% of the life satisfaction of the freshmen students. The self-efficacy factor alone had a significant effect on the life satisfaction. In conclusion, self-efficacy is an important determinant of the degree of life satisfaction the first year university students perceive and especially so in male university students.
