The Effect of Maternal Parenting Stress, Peer Relationship and Teacher-Student Relationship on Children s Daily Hassles

  • 4

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence maternal parenting stress level and children s relationships with peers and teachers have on their perceived daily hassles. Participants consisted of 187 fourth and fifth grader(89 boys, 98 girls) and their mothers. Measurements included the Children s Daily Hassles(Kim, 2006), the Maternal Parenting Stress Scale(Shin, 1997), Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment(Ok, 1998), and the School Adjustment Scale: teacher-student relationship(Cho, 2014). Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson s correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The major findings can be summarized as follows: (1) children s relationships with peers and teachers each strongly explained their daily hassles with friends. (2) maternal parenting stress and the relationships with peers and teachers each significantly explained both the daily hassles involving studying and parents. In conclusion, depending on the subscale of children s daily hassles, maternal parenting stress, the peer relationship and the teacher-student relationship had different effects on the perceived daily hassles.
