The Moderating Effects of Mothers’ Parenting Styles on the Relationship between Preschoolers’ Temperament and Their Behavior Problems

The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effects of mothers’ parenting styles on the relationship between preschoolers’ temperament and their behavior problems. For the purpose, the data of 1,703 4-year-olds and their mothers from 2012 Panel Study on Korean Children were analyzed using PASW 21.0 to carry out descriptive statistics, correlation co-efficiencies, and hierarchical regression. The results showed that preschoolers’ temperament, behavior problems, and their mothers’ parenting styles were correlated. Preschoolers’ emotionality was negatively correlated with their mothers’ warm parenting styles but positively correlated with their mothers’ controlling/suppressing parenting styles. Preschoolers’ activity and sociability were positively correlated with both warm and controlling/suppressing parenting styles of their mothers. In terms of behavior problems, mothers’ warm parenting styles were negatively correlated with preschoolers’ internalizing behavior problems as well as their externalizing behavior problems. In addition, preschoolers’ emotionality and sociability along with their mothers’ warm parenting styles effected behavior problems. Moreover, the moderating effects of mothers’ warm parenting styles on the relationship between preschoolers’ emotionality and their behavior problems were found. On the other hand, preschoolers’ emotionality and sociability along with their mothers’ controlling/suppressing parenting styles effected behavior problems. However, the moderating effects of mothers’ controlling/suppressing parenting styles on the relationship between preschoolers’ temperament and their behavior problems were not found.
