What’s Good to Have a Sibling?: Quadratic Trajectories of Fathers’ Parenting Involvement and Socio-Emotional Problem Behaviors of Children

  • 26

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether having a younger sibling is good for older siblings via changes in family interactions. Time 1 to Time 6 data from the Panel Study on Korean Children by the Korean Institute of Child Care and Education (KICCE) were used for this study. The subjects were 602 children who were 5-month-old when the data was first collected. Quadratic trajectories of fathers’ parenting involvement over 3 years (Time 1 to Time 4) for preschoolers with and without sibling were analyzed. Analysis of Latent Growth Model were used to test whether fathers’ involvement over time had effects on marital satisfaction of mothers and mothers’ affective parenting at Time 4, which affected children’s social and emotional problematic behaviors in Time 6. Fathers involved more in parenting over 3 years when they had two or more children than one child. As fathers’ parenting involvement increased, mothers reported to be likely more satisfied in their marital relations, and showed more affective parenting attitude to their children. As a result, it was less likely that their children exhibited social and emotional problems two years later at five years old. Policy implications to increase paternal parenting involvement were discussed.
