The aim of this study was to examine the relative influences of young children s temperament, their mothers’ demand, and goodness-of-fit between them on young children’s emotional regulation. A total of 272 mothers with young children that lived in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo participated in this study. The data were analyzed using analysis of frequency, Pearson s correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The main results are as follows. First, both the children’s emotion regulation and positive emotion control were positively correlated with adaptability and regularity and negatively correlated with adaptability goodness-of-fit. The maladaptive emotion regulation score had negative correlation with adaptability and regularity and positive correlation with regularity demands and adaptability goodness-of-fit. Second, there were some differences in the influential factors depending on sub-variables of emotion regulation. Specifically, the total score of young children’s emotion regulation were most influenced by children’s adaptability temperament, adaptability goodness-of-fit, regularity temperament, and activity goodness-of-fit in their order. Positive emotion control was influenced by adaptability, adaptability goodness-of-fit, and regularity temperament. The influential factors of maladaptive emotion regulation were adaptability temperament, activity goodness- of-fit, regularity temperament, and adaptability goodness-of-fit. The present study suggests that children’s temperament and goodness-of-fit are important influential factors on young children’s emotion regulation and should be considered together in order to improve young children’s emotion regulation.
