Verification of the Mediated Effect of Self-Differentiation in the Relationship between Adult Attachment and Marriage Satisfaction in Married Men and Women

The purpose of this study sought to verify the mediating effect of differntation of self in the relationship between adult attachment and marital satisfaction. As for the subject of the study, 200 married men and women were surveyed, and self-report questionnaires were used. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 statistical program, and performed correlation and regression analyses. The mediation analysis was done according to the steps presented by Baron and Kenny (1986). The findings are as follows: First, there are significant correlations among adult attachment, differentiation of self, and marital satisfaction. Second, the mediating role of differentiation of self in the relationship between adult attachment and marriage satisfaction was found to be significant, and showed a partial mediation in the relationship between attachment anxiety and marriage satisfaction as well as in the relationship between attachment avoidance and marital satisfaction. Finally, the implications fromthe findings were discussed. Since the mediating effect of differentiation of self has been verified, it is necessary to develop education and counseling programs focusing on differentiation of self including each subscale, which will lead to increase in marital satisfaction
