The purpose of this study is to verify the moderated mediating effect of active physical exercise on the relationship between social withdrawal and cyber delinquency behavior through smartphone dependency of adolescents. This study analyzed the data derived from a sample of 2,541 middle school students from Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018) by National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI). Data were analyzed for moderated mediating effects between variables using Process macro version 3.5 (model 1, 4, 58) methods. The results of this study were as follows. First, smartphone dependency fully mediated the relationship between social withdrawal and cyber delinquency behavior of middle school students. Second, active physical exercise of middle school students had a moderating effect on the relationship between smartphone dependency and cyber delinquency behavior. Third, the mediating effect of smartphone dependency was moderated by active physical exercise in the relation between social withdrawal and cyber delinquency behavior. Namely, if middle school students exercise actively, social withdrawal had a less effect on cyber delinquency behavior through smartphone dependency than if they do not. Based on these results, we suggested practical interventions to prevent and reduce the problems of cyber delinquency behavior problem of middle school students, especially socially withdrawn, by decreasing smartphone dependency.
