The purpose of this study is to explore 5-year-old children’s play access rituals and their peers’ reactions, in relation to their popularity in a kindergarten classroom. Research participants were 28 children in a public kindergarten class, of which 14 were focal children. Data were collected through participatory observation and unstructured child interviews. Participatory observation was carried out twice a week for 5 months during free play time, a total of 40 times. As a result of the study, there was a difference in the pattern of play access rituals according to the children’s popularity. Popular children tended to respect their peers’ ongoing play when they used to play access strategies, and such strategies gained the highest peer acceptance. The results suggest that teachers should understand children’s social dynamics and peer culture in each classroom in order to properly support children’s play access and play interactions.
