An Exploration of an Immigrant Child’s Agency and Social Interactions in Her Preschool

This study aims to explore the agency and social interactions of an immigrant child, identified as a shy girl with a school adjustment difficulty. Data were collected through class observations and interviews with the child’s teachers and mother. The findings highlight how this immigrant child showed her active agency in building relationships with others and adapting to and negotiating with class rules. The material settings, class rules, physical space, classmates, and/or teachers’ presence restrained or promoted her interactions with her peers. Thus, this study offers important insights into how immigrant children may be better understood and supported by rethinking educational practices that can limit their agency and peer relationships.
