Internalized, but Unapproachable Western: Reading Yun Ch’i-ho’s Perception towards the West during His Adolescence Period through His Diary

본 논문은 ‘국가주의’와 ‘동양주의’가 경합하던 전환기 지식인이었던 윤치호가‘국가주의’보다는 인종주의에 근거한 ‘동양주의’로 돌아설 수밖에 없었던 이유를 추적하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 윤치호가 1895년 조선에 영구 귀국하기 이전까지의 일기를 주요 분석 대상으로 한다. 이 기간은 윤치호가 17세에서 31세까지였던 기간으로 한 인간의 가치관, 세계관이 정립되는 청년기 시기이다. 국내에서의 본격적인 활동 이전에 윤치호는 어떠한 준거점을 가지고 서양 그리고 세계를 인식하고 있었는지를 살펴봄으로써 이후 윤치호가 ‘국가주의’ 대신 일본 주도의 ‘동양주의’에 경도된 내재적 원인을 추적해본다. 윤치호가 ‘국가주의’ 대신 ‘동양주의’를 선택할 수밖에 없었던 이유로 본 논문은 윤치호 내부에 내재된 서구에 주목하고자 한다. 본 연구는 특수성으로서가 아닌 보편성으로 편재(偏在)하는 서구가 윤치호의 세계 인식의 준거점이었으나, 서구의 근대 속에 내재되어 있는 배타성은 조선인 윤치호의 접근을 허용하지 않았기에 서구의 대안으로서 ‘동양주의’를 택할 수밖에 없었다고 주장한다.

This paper attempts to trace why Yun Ch’i-ho, an intellectual in the transition period when state-centered “nationalism” and race-centered “orientalism” competed, had no choice but to return to “orientalism.” To this end, this study mainly analyzes Yun Ch’i-ho’s diary before he returned to Chosun permanently in 1895. This period was when Yun Ch’i-ho was 17 to 31 years old, which is essential in establishing one’s own values and worldviews. Furthermore, by examining with what criteria Yun Ch’i-ho perceived the West and the world before his full-fledged activities in Korea, we will trace the intrinsic causes of Yun Ch’i-ho’s affection for Japanese- led “orientalism” instead of “nationalism.” The West, which was claimed to be universality rather than specificity, was the reference point for Yun Ch’i-ho’s world perception. However, the exclusivity inherent in Western modernity did not allow him to access it thoroughly, so he had no choice but to choose “orientalism” as an alternative to the West.
