<채생기우>의 김령과 <장수과전>의 류순정이 비상한 두뇌로 단계적인 설득 전략을 통해 몰락 양반을 좌지우지하는 양상은, 중세시대에 중시되었던 체면과 윤리가 더 이상 그 힘을 유지하지 못하고, 변화하는 시대에 적합한 생존 능력으로 합리성과 설득력이 대두했음을 보여준다. 김령의 경우 딸의 안위를 위해 비밀리에 일을 진행하고, 류순정의 경우 공권력을 자신의 편으로 만들며 그의 사기에 많은 이들이 공조하게 한다. 이들은 변화하는 시대에 완고하게 과거의 규범을 고수하거나 욕망을 비이성적으로 추구하는 자들을 비판하는 주체로서 제 역할을 하는 동시에, 선악과 하늘의 규범을 넘어 변화하는 자본과 욕망의 시대에 적응한 새로운 주인공으로 형상화된다. 두 작품에서 공통적으로 나타나는 작가의식을 발견할 수 있다. 당시는 신분제가 흔들리고 자본과 욕망이 중세의 체면과 윤리 가치를 흔드는 시기였다. 이러한 변화된 시기에 작가 이현기는 여러 전형적 인물상을 통해 욕망의 긍정과 이성적 사고를 강조하고 자유와 행복을 제약하는 규범을 비판하며 상호교환으로 변화된 인간관계를 보여주고 있다.
