The influences of parental empathy on children's emotion regulation: the mediating effect of self-esteem

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effects of self-esteem on the relation between parental empathy and children’s emotion regulation. The study investigated 543 children who are in the 5th and 6th grade of 4 primary schools. Results of the study are summarized as follows. First, with respect to parental empathy by grade, there was a statistically significant difference. That is, father’s empathy of grad 5 was higher than grad 6. And with respect to emotion regulation by gender, it shows statistically significant difference. That is, emotion regulation of girls was higher than boys. Second, children’s emotion regulation according to parental empathy was partial mediated by self-esteem.
