The influence of marital conflicts on children's psychological adjustment problems : The mediating effects of child emotional security

정서적 안정성 가설이란 부부갈등이 아동의 심리적 적응문제에 영향을 미칠 때, 양자의 관계를 매개하는 아동의 심리 내적 매개과정을 설명하고자 하는 이론이다. 본 연구는 부부갈등이 아동의 내재화 및 외현화 문제에 영향을 미치는 과정에서 아동의 정서적 안정성이 그 매개 역할을 하는지 밝히고자 한다. 서울과 대전 시내 초등학교 5학년 아동 282명(남아 130명, 여아 152명)과 그들의 부모, 교사로부터 자료를 수집하였고, 수집된 자료를 바탕으로 아동의 정서적 안정성이 매개효과를 가지는지, 그리고 정서적 안정성 가설의 모델이 적합한지를 구조방정식 접근법에 근거하여 분석하였다. 그 결과, 정서적 안정성 가설의 모델은 아동의 내재화 및 외현화 문제 각각에 대해 괜찮은 적합도, 좋은 적합도를 보였으므로, 부부갈등은 아동의 정서적 안정성을 매개로 하여 아동의 적응문제에 영향을 미친다고 할 수 있다.

The emotional security hypothesis present explanation for how interparental conflicts affect child psychological adjustment. We examined children's emotional security as a mediator in the relations between marital conflicts and children's internalizing and externalizing problems. 282 5th grade elementary school children(130 boys and 152 girls), their parents and teachers participated. Methodologically the structural equation modeling was employed to demonstrate the associations between the proposed mediator and the adjustment problems. This research confirmed that children's emotional security was identified as a significant mediator that link marital conflict and child adjustment problems. The emotional security hypothesis provided a reasonable fit(internalizing problems), a close fit(externalizing problems) and the emotional security hypothesis was also fit to this data. Therefore this research suggests that marital conflict, children's emotional security and adjustment problems are interrelated, and that emotional security is one of key mediators of the relations between marital conflicts and child psychological adjustment.
