한 생태교육자의 교육의 사회적 책임(ESR) 실천에 관한 생애사 연구*

A Life History Study of an Ecological Educator from Perspectives of Education for Social Responsibility

연구목적: 이 연구는 ESR을 실천하고 있는 한 생태교육자의 생애를 ESR 관점에서 이해하고 개념화하는 데 목적이 있다. 이러한 목적 아래 평생 생태교육을 실천해온 참여자가 발전시켜온 전문성의 특징을 규명하고 참여자의 삶과 전문성이 ESR의 이론화와 실천에 주는 의미와 시사점을 발견하고자 하였다. 연구방법: 이 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 생애사 연구를 진행하였다. 2차례의 심층면담, 참여관찰, 문서분석을 통해 참여자의 삶의 경험을 총체적으로 추적하고 분석하고자 하였다. 연구결과: 참여자는 사회적 열등감을 개인의 의지를 발휘하여 사회적 책임감으로 승화시켰다. 참여자만이 가진 독특한 ESR 실천 전문성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 마음을 끄는 아이디어 생산력이다. 둘째, 한계가 없는 집요한 탐구력이다. 셋째, 선한 의지로 시작하는 실천 에너지이다. 넷째, 지속적 변화를 만들며 성장하는 능력이다. 다섯째, 가치를 중심으로 관계를 형성하는 능력이다. 논의 및 결론: 이 연구는 교사 개인의 독특한 전문성이 사회적 책임 이행 능력으로 확장되는 사례를 제시함으로써 ESR 실천을 위한 시사점을 제시하였다는 데 의의가 있다.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to conceptualize the characteristics of an ecological educator's professionalism from the perspectives of education for social responsibility (ESR). Accordingly, the researchers tried to identify the characteristics of the participant’s life as an ecological educator and discover the meanings and implications for practicing ESR. Method: A life history study was conducted via in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis. Results: The expertise of the participant can be understood as sublimating a sense of social inferiority to social responsibility. The participant’s professional characteristics in terms of ESR were revealed in the following five aspects. First was the ability to generate ideas that speak to the hearts of others. Second was the ability to inquire relentlessly without limits. Third was the energy of practice with good will. Fourth was the ability of sustained growth and transformation. Fifth was the ability to form relationships centered on values. Conclusion: This study is meaningful in that it presents implications for ESR practice by presenting a case in which a teacher's unique professionalism extends to a rather wider influence of education for social responsibility.
