A 6-year-old boy presented skeletal Cl III vertical facial type, and reversed overjet and anterior open bite. He received orthopedic treatment using a rapid palatal expansion appliance with Facemask. After 1 year of facemask therapy, he showed improvement in anteroposterior Skeletal relation with a normal overjet. However, the vertical relationship worsened a little, and anterior open bite still remained. FR III was used as an orthopedic retainer with lip seal training. After 1 year and 8 months, the skeletal Class I relationship was well maintained, and vertical relationship improved with decrease of the mandibular plane angle and gonial angle. This case report presents and discusses the effect of FR III as an active retainer after facemask treatment.
