영어 기초학력 보장을 위한 예비교사의 교수역량 배양에 관한 사례연구: 온라인 플랫폼 활용을 중심으로

A Case Study of Pedagogical Competence of Pre-Service Teachers to Support Underachieving English Language Learners for English Basic Competency: Utilizing Online Platform

COVID-19로 인하여 대면수업이 어려워짐에 따라, 기초학력 미달 학습자가 증가하였고, 영어과 예비교사들은 학습자의 기초학력을 보장할 수 있도록 교수역량 배양의 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 이를 위해 ‘영어학습부진아 이해와 지도’ 과목을 개설하고 ① 영어학습부진아 이해, ② 영어학습부진아 지도, ③ 성찰과 평가 세 단계로 구성된 교육과정으로 운영하였다. 본 연구에 참여한 예비교사는 온라인 플랫폼 클래스카드 실습, 수업시연, 교육과정 설계, 학습 자료 제작 후, 영어 기초학력 미달 중학생을 3주간 1:1로 멘토링하였다. 중학생과 예비교사를 대상으로 진행된 평가회에서 수집된 설문조사의 결과는 조형숙(2018)의 연구결과와 비교하여 제시하였다. 예비교사의 교수 일지와 최종 보고서를 분석한 결과, 학습자와 교수자 모두에게 온라인 플랫폼 활용이 유용하지만 플랫폼의 기능을 익히기 어려웠고 학습 환경 및 학습자 특성에 따라 활용이 어려운 경우도 있다고 보고하였다. 예비교사는 영어 멘토링을 진행하면서 온라인 플랫폼의 중요성을 깨닫고 예비교사로서 영어 기초학력 보장을 위한 교수법을 고민하며 진로를 탐색하기도 하였다. 마지막으로, 연구 결과를 바탕으로 영어 기초학력을 보장하기 위해 어떻게 예비교사의 교수역량을 배양할 것인지 제안을 덧붙였다.

Improving pedagogical competence of English pre-service teachers(PSTs), a college course of ‘Understanding and Teaching of Underachieving English Language Learners(U-ELLs)' was designed. It consists of 3 stages: 1) understanding U-ELLs, 2) teaching U-ELLs, and 3) evaluation and reflection. During the stage of understanding U-ELLs, PSTs participated in a workshop about online platform Classcard, micro-teaching with Classcard, and preparing 3-week teaching plans and educational materials. In the second stage, the PSTs taught U-ELLs through a one-on-one English tutoring program. After completing 3-week tutoring, the PSTs and U-ELLs evaluated their learning experiences. The survey results were compared to those of Cho(2018). The teaching logs and reflective journals, written by the participating PSTs, showed that utilizing online platform was useful for teaching U-ELLs but that PSTs experienced difficulties in being familiar with the various functions of online platform and in effectively utilizing the platform according to learning environments and leaner factors. Also, the research results indicated that realizing the importance of online platform while tutoring U-ELLs, PSTs explored teaching methods and their career paths. This paper provides suggestions for teacher educators to improve PSTs’ pedagogical competences to support U-ELLs for English basic competency.
