An Interpretation of “Water of Life” from the Perspective of Analytical Psychology

전래동화는 옛날부터 전해 오는 이야기로, 동심을 그 바탕으로 하여 꾸며진 일정한 구조를 가진 이야기를 말한다. 전래동화는 민담의 한 종류로 풍부한 원형을 품고 있다. 우리는 전래동화를 해석함으로써, 인간에 대한 심층적 이해를 도모할 수 있으며, 동화의 상징을 해석함으로써 마음속 대극을 조화시키고 통합을 이루어 낼 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 동화 ‘생명의 물’을 분석심리학적으로 해석해 봄으로써, 동화에 담긴 여러가지 상징을 해석하고 탐색 보고자 하였다. 병이 걸린 아버지를 치유할 수 있는 생명의 물을 구하러 아들들이 떠나게 된다. 그러나 첫째와 둘째는 산에 갇히게 되고, 셋째는 힘들게 생명의 물을 구하게 된다. 잠시 잠들어 벗어나지 못할 뻔 했으나 셋째 왕자는 다행히 위험을 벗어나게 되고, 세 왕국을 도와주게 된다. 그러나 돌아오는 길에 형들의 꼬임에 빠져 왕으로부터 버림받게 된다. 일 년간 숲에 숨어 지내던 셋째왕자는 일 년 뒤 공주를 만나서 결혼을 하고, 왕과도 화해를 하게 된다. 생명의 물은 셋째 왕자의 그림자와 페르소나의 통합, 대극의 합일과 같은 개성화의 과정을 잘 드러내고 있다.

A traditional fairy tale is a story that has been passed down since ancient times, and it refers to a story with a certain structure that is decorated based on the child's mind. Traditional fairy tales are a kind of folk tales and have a rich archetype. By interpreting traditional fairy tales, we can promote a deep understanding of human beings, and by interpreting the symbols of folk tales, we can harmonize and achieve unity in our minds. This study tried to interpret and explore various symbols contained in fairy tales by interpreting the fairy tale ‘water of life’ through analytical psychology through a subjective approach. The plot of the 'water of life' is as follows. The sons leave to seek the water of life that can heal their ailing father. But, the first and second sons are locked up in the mountains, and the third son sleeps for a while where he saved the water of life. He almost couldn't get out, eventually, he was able to get out. On the way back, he was tricked by his brothers and was abandoned by the king. After hiding in the forest for a year, he meets the princess a year later, gets married, and reconciles with the king. 'The water of life' well reveals the process of individuation, such as the unification of the shadow.
