사용 이론과 회의주의를 넘어서

Over the Use Theory and Skepticism: On Wittgenstein’s Quietism

본고는 후기 비트겐슈타인의 철학이 사용 이론이나 회의주의가 아니라 정적주의로 해석되어야 한다고 지적하고자 한다. 사용 이론이나 회의주의를 통해 후기 비트겐슈타인의 철학을 설명하려는 입장은 얼핏 서로 다른 것처럼 보이더라도 사실 동전의 양면에 지나지 않는다. 두 입장은 모두 비트겐슈타인이 특정한 의미의 조건을 미리 상정한 상태에서 의미 있는 언어와 무의미한 언어를 구분하였다고 주장한다. 이러한 독해는 심지어 후기 비트겐슈타인의 철학에 대한 정통적 해석에서조차 발견된다. 그러나 의미의 조건을 바탕으로 의미의 한계를 규정하려는 시도는 의미에 대한 독단주의와 회의주의의 딜레마를 피할 수 없다. 본고는 우선 사용 이론을 통해 후기 비트겐슈타인의 철학을 해석하려는 입장과 회의주의를 통해 후기 비트겐슈타인의 철학을 해석하려는 입장을 각각 비판할 것이다(Ⅱ~Ⅲ). 다음으로, 두 입장이 전제하는 의미의 한계 개념이 후기 비트겐슈타인의 철학을 일종의 초월론적 철학으로 바라보는 정통적 해석에도 숨겨져 있다는 사실을 폭로할 것이다(Ⅳ). 마지막으로, 정적주의야말로 후기 비트겐슈타인의 철학에 대한 주석적으로 올바른 해석이자 철학적으로도 설득력 있는 입장이라고 강조할 것이다(Ⅴ).

This study points out that later Wittgenstein’s philosophy should be interpreted not as a use theory of meaning or skepticism but as quietism. Although the positions trying to explain later Wittgenstein’s philosophy as a use theory of meaning or skepticism seem different from each other, they are in fact both sides of a coin. The two positions claim that Wittgenstein separates significant and nonsensical languages by postulating certain conditions for meaning. This kind of reading is sometimes found even in the orthodox interpretation of later Wittgenstein. However, the endeavor to define the bounds of sense on the basis of conditions for meaning can not escape the dilemma between dogmatism and skepticism of meaning. First, I will criticize the positions attempting to interpret later Wittgenstein’s philosophy as a use theory of meaning or skepticism (Ⅱ~Ⅲ). Next, I will expose that the idea of the bounds of sense presupposed by the two positions is hidden in the orthodox interpretation, which understands later Wittgenstein’s philosophy as a kind of transcendental philosophy (Ⅳ). Finally, I will emphasize that it is quietism that is an exegetically right interpretation of later Wittgenstein’s philosophy and a philosophically plausible position (Ⅴ).
