The Complementary Relation between the Aesthetics Practices in Mahayana Buddhism and Aesthetic Judgment of Kant - From the Perspective of Comparative Philosophy -

The purpose of this paper is through the comparative research of Critique of the Power of Judgment and Awakening of Faith 大乘起信論-for the two are the representative text of kant’s aesthetics and Mahāyāna Buddhism respectively, to point about that Mahāyāna Buddhism can be think as an aesthetic religion for its aim, the world of Enlightenment is consistent with Kant’s account of judgments on beauty, and the practice of Buddhism can fulfill typical critique of Kant’s aesthetic that it is have no way to be realize. For this aim, The author first gives the proofs of the possibility and reasons of building the reciprocal connection between Kant’s transcendental aesthetics and Awakening of Faith by pointing out the “aspect Mind in terms of the Absolut (心真如相) is consistent with the transcendental structure of Kant for its transcendentality. Based on this relation, the author further illustrates the consistency of Kant’s aesthetic and Mahāyāna Buddhism by pointing out that a series of concepts such as the most important characteristic in Kant’s aesthetic-“Disinterestedness” and “Śamatha (止 cessation),” “Vipaśyanā (觀 clear observation)” or the “Mind in terms of the Absolut 心真如”and the description of Aesthetic state described by Kant have commonality in faculty or destination. As the conclusion, the author disclose the possibility of budling Buddhist aesthetics in a strict sense, while the practices of such Buddhist aesthetics will makes the Kant’s transcendental aesthetics which is often criticized by as ethereally far away from experience world obtain the practical curriculum.
