A Study on use of Korean Dictionary as Contents in Elementary Korean Education

Purpose: This study began with a sense of concern about the situation in which the use of Korean dictionary is not systematically conducted in elementary Korean education despite its diverse values. Firstly, there is a problem in selecting educational contents. Secondly, there is a problem in organizing educational contents. Therefore, this study aims to find ways to use Korean dictionary as contents in elementary Korean education by selecting and organizing them. Method: Referencing others' research and results, this study revealed the context and the meaning of the use of Korean dictionary in elementary Korean education. It also analyzed national curriculum, textbooks and learners to find actual conditions and needs for Korean dictionary education in elementary school. Through these findings, it introduced the concept of educational contents and provided criteria for the use of Korean dictionary as educational contents. Results: The context of the use of Korean dictionary is divided into the context of Korean study, other academic studies and daily language use. More specifically, Korean dictionary can be used as a tool for collecting and exploring language information in the area of grammar and developing understanding and expression skills in the area of function. Analyzing national curriculum, textbooks and learners, the problems were found in selecting and organizing educational contents and consistency between curriculum and textbook. Conclusion: The purpose of this study is to present the effective ways to use Korean dictionary as contents in elementary Korean education. The findings are summarized as follows. First, Chapter II revealed the context and the meaning of the use of Korean dictionary in elementary Korean education. Second, Chapter Ⅲ analyzed the national curriculum, textbooks and learners to find actual conditions and needs of the use of Korean dictionary in elementary Korean education. Third, Chapter Ⅳ introduced the concept of educational contents and presented reasonable criteria for the use of Korean dictionary as educational contents. It also selected and organized educational contents by grading and integrating them. Furthermore, it showed specific contents for Korean dictionary education and integrated lessons with writing and grammar areas. Finally, this study hopes to come up with better ways to use Korean dictionary more practically in elementary Korean education.
