Analysis of the Jeju haenyeo images depicted in picture books

본 연구의 목적은 그림책 속 제주 해녀를 묘사한 이미지를 분석하여 해녀에 대한 문화적 가치와 해녀 표상의 변화 과정을 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 국내에 출판된 해녀 그림책 가운데 제주 지역의 해녀를 주인공으로 다룬 그림책 9권을 선정하여 글과 그림의 내용을 분석하였다. 제주 해녀를 묘사한 그림책을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 물질을 통해 인생을 개척하는 주체적 여성, 둘째, 호~이 숨비소리를 내며 바다와 호흡하는 여성, 셋째, 세대를 거쳐 공동체 문화를 전수하는 여성, 넷째, 아름답게 물질하며 바당 밭을 가꾸는 여성이다. 연구 결과를 통해 제주 해녀 공동체와 여성들의 삶에 대한 이해가 높아졌고, 해녀에 대한 표현이 긍정적이며 심미적으로 변화하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 인간과 자연이 상생하는 삶을 실천하는 제주 해녀 그림책을 통해 지속가능한 사회의 실마리를 찾는 것으로 논의하였다.

This study analyzes the images depicting haenyeo, women divers of Jeju Province in Korea, in picture books in order to examine the cultural value and changing representation of haenyeo. Among the picture books published in Korea, nine picture books with the female divers of Jeju as the main character were selected for textual and picture analysis. The following themes come to fore in these texts: a subjective woman who pioneers life through diving ; a woman who breathes with the sea while making the sound of ho-i; women who pass on community culture through generations; and a woman who cares for the sea. These picture books reveal an evolving expression of haenyeo—both in its content and in its aesthetics. Notably, the understanding of the Jeju haenyeo community and women’s lives have improved. These picture books lend clues to creating a sustainable society in which humans and nature coexist.
