한일 중학교 역사교과서의 근대 조약 서술 분석

A Comparison on the Description of Modern Treaty in Korean and Japanese Middle School History Textbooks

본 연구는 한일 양국의 중학교 교과서를 중심으로 근대 시기 한국이 일본과 체결한 조약을 어떻게 서술했는지 비교·분석한 글이다. 한국 교과서는 교육과정의 ‘대강화’ 지침에 의해 구체적인 설명보다는 간략하게 서술하고 있으며 일본 교과서는 많은 내용을 포괄적으로 담으려는 분량상의 차이점이 눈에 띈다. 일본 교과서는 자국의 개국조약의 불평등성을 구체적으로 다루면서도 이후 한국과 체결한 다양한 조약을 언급하며 한국 병탄 과정을 조약 체결에 의해 합법적인 것으로 보이게끔 서술하고 있다. 반면 한국 교과서는 강화도조약의 불평등성은 제기하면서도 한국의 식민지와 직결되었던 시모노세키조약이나 포츠머스조약에 대해서는 언급하지 않는 한계를 갖는다. 또 을사늑약과 병탄조약에 대한 기술은 보다 분명히 할 필요가 있어 보인다.

This study compares and analyzes how Korea described the treaties signed with Japan during the modern period, focusing on middle school history textbooks Korea and Japan. Korean textbooks describe more briefly than specific explanations according to the “roughly” guidelines of the curriculum, and Japanese’s show differences in quantity that try to comprehensively contain many contents. The Japanese textbooks specifically deal with the inequality of its founding treaties, but also describes the process of Chosun’s annexation as legitimate, referring to various treaties with Chosun. On the other hand, Korean textbooks have limitations in raising the inequality of the Ganghwa Island Treaty but not mentioning the Shimonoseki Treaty or the Portsmouth Treaty, directly related to the Korean colony. In addition, the description of the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905 and the Japan’s Annexation Treaty seems to be clearer.
