미술관의 사회적 역할에 대한 탐색적 연구

An Exploratory Study on the Social Roles of Art Museums: Focusing on Exhibitions at the Seoul Museum of Art

오늘날 뮤지엄이 보다 더 다양한 커뮤니티와 협업하고 우호적인 관계를 만들어나가며 사회적 의제에 열린 장소로 기능해야 한다는 인식이 강조되고 있다. 뮤지엄의 사회적 역할에 대한 요구와 실천이 증가하고 있는 상황에서 이 논문은 미술관의 대표적인 기능인 전시를 통해 사회적 역할을 수행하기 위한 미술관의 방향성을 탐색하고자 했다. 먼저 20세기 후반 이후 전개되어 온 뮤지엄의 사회적 역할에 대한 담론을 살펴보고, 동시대의 사회적 주제를 다룬 서울시립미술관의 두 전시-《에이징 월드 - Will you still love me tomorrow?》와 《기후미술관: 우리 집의 생애》-를 질적 사례연구 하여 미술관의 실천 양상과 의의, 과제를 모색했다. 사회적 주제를 전면에 다룬 두 전시에서 나타나는 주요 양상과 의의로, 협업의 플랫폼으로서 미술관과 큐레이터의 확장된 역할 수행, 전시와 공공프로그램의 융합을 통한 만남과 대화의 교육 실천, 전시 주제를 전시 구현 방식에 적용하는 것의 중요성, 사회적 대화를 촉진하는 전시물의 역할을 논의했다. 이를 바탕으로 사회적 주제를 다룬 전시가 일회적 실천이 아닌 뮤지엄의 사회적 역할을 수행하는 요소로 통합되고 지속되기 위한 과제를 제시했다. 본 연구는 미술관의 전시 사례를 맥락적·심층적으로 연구하여 미술관이 전시를 통해 사회적 역할을 강화하기 위한 이론적 토대와 실천 방안을 탐색한 의의가 있다.

There is a growing recognition that museums should function as social places and provide a wider variety of communities with positive relationships. With increasing demands for and practices of social roles of museums, this study explores the directions museums can take to fulfill more active social roles through exhibitions—the primary public function of museums. First, this study examined discourses on museums’ social roles that have evolved since the late-twentieth century. Then the cases of two exhibitions at the Seoul Museum of Art -<Aging World - Will you still love me tomorrow?> and <Climate Museum: Life and Death of Our Home>- were examined to explore practical and theoretical aspects of social roles of an art museum. Through theses two exhibitions, this study discussed the museum as a platform for collaboration, as well as the curator’s expanded roles. This study also addressed the practice of ‘pedagogy of encounter’ through the integration of exhibitions and public programs. Based on the discussions, this paper presented the tasks to sustain and enhance the social roles of museums with socially-themed exhibitions. The significant of this study lies in its exploration of both the theoretical foundations and curatorial practices for fostering the social roles of art museums through in-depth, reflective case studies of exhibitions.
