특성화 고등학교 근무 경험 저경력 전문상담교사의 직업 적응과정에 대한 내러티브 연구

A Narrative Inquiry into Novice Counselors' Work Adjustment Process in Specialized High Schools

본 연구는 특성화 고등학교에서 근무한 저경력 전문상담교사의 직업 적응과정에 대해 심층적으로 탐구하고자 하는 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 2명의 연구 참여자들에게 전문상담교사로서의 적응과정이 어떻게 경험되고, 어떤 의미를 구성하는지 내러티브 탐구절차에 따라 분석하였다. 연구 참여자들은 저경력 상태에서 특성화 고등학교에 발령을 받아 전문상담교사의 직무를 수행하였으며, 특성화고라는 낯설고 고독한 환경에서 복잡하고 만성화된 어려움을 호소하는 수많은 학생을 대상으로 개입하며 혼란과 소진을 겪었다. 이 과정에서 이들은 전문적인 상담 수행을 위해 학습하고, 개입 전략을 조정하고 버텨내며, 주변 관계들로부터 힘을 얻어 특성화고라는 환경에 적응하고 성취와 보람을 찾아간 것으로 나타났다. 참여자들과 도출한 특성화 고등학교 전문상담교사로서의 직업 적응과정 경험의 의미는 ‘특성화고 상담 현장에 내던져짐’, ‘낯설고 고독한 초심상담자로서 버텨내기 위해 노력함’, ‘갖가지 전략과 지지에 힘입어 성취와 보람을 찾아감’이라는 3가지 주제로 나타났다. 결과를 바탕으로 개인적, 실제적, 사회적 정당성의 맥락에서 논의하였으며, 연구의 의의 및 한계를 바탕으로 후속연구에 대해 제언하였다.

This study aimed to understand the process of how professional school counselors adapted to their work as beginners in specialized high schools. For the purpose, the study examined how two novice counselors organized the meanings of experiences of work adjustment through the narrative exploration methodology procedure. The participants were assigned to specialized high schools when they were beginning counselors, and experienced confusion and burnout as they intervened with numerous students who complained of complex and chronic problems in the unfamiliar and isolated environment of specialized high schools. In this process, the participants learned how to conduct professional counseling, modulated intervention strategies and gained competence from social support and network resources, and found fulfillment and pleasure as a result. The meaning of the experiences of the work adjustment process organized with the participants was “being thrown into a specialized high school,” “striving to persevere as an inexpert and lonely novice counselor,” and “using a variety of strategies, gaining competence from social and professional support and finding fulfillment and pleasure.” Based on the findings, the implications for beginning counselors in specialized high schools and the limitations of this study were discussed.
