Effect of Health Behavior and Status on the Health-related Quality of Life of Middle-aged Men according to their Participation in Economic Activities : Using the 2017 Korea Health Panel Data

Purpose: This study investigated the effects of health behavior and status of middle-aged men according to their levels of economic activity participation on their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) using 2017 Korea Health Panel data. Methods: The Korea Health Panel data from February to June 2017 were used. Of the 1,626 male respondents aged 50-64 years, 1,434 were in the economic activity participation group, and 192 were in the economic inactivity group. HRQoL was measured using the EuroQol Group's Euro Quality of life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) index. The data were analyzed using the t-test, chi-square test, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression on the SPSS/WIN 25 software. Results: In the economic inactivity group, the factors affecting HRQoL were education, activity restriction, and frustration, with their explanatory power being 47.0%. In the economic activity group, along with the above-mentioned factors, the other predisposing factors were age, household income, chronic disease, suicidal ideation, stress, and problems such as vision, hearing, and eating, with the explanatory power being 28.0%. In both groups, the most associating factor was activity restriction. Conclusion: Healthcare providers need to consider the economic activity of middle-aged men while developing healthcare policies or measures to improve their HRQoL.
