박물관에서의 유산 해석(heritage interpretation)과 유산 설명(heritage presentation): 박물관의 발전 과정에서 살펴본 유산 설명의 변화를 중심으로

Heritage Interpretation and Heritage Presentation in Museums

박물관은 대표적인 유산 설명 기관이다. 유산 해석 분야가 근대적 관점에서 포용적 관점으로 변화하면서, 박물관 역시 포용성을 핵심 가치로 두고 사회적 역할을 수행해왔다. 유산 해석이란, ‘문화유산의 다수 가치를 인식하고 특정 의도에 따라 대표 가치(들)를 선택하는 활동’이며, 유산 설명은 ‘유산 해석의 결과로 도출된 문화유산의 대표적 가치(들)를 공식화하는 모든 활동’으로 정의할 수 있다. 아무리 신중하고 전략적으로 계획된 문화유산 정보, 즉 잘 이루어진 유산 해석이 있더라도, 대중과의 소통인 유산 설명이 적절하게 이루어지지 않는 한 유산 해석이 완성되지 못한다는 의미이다. 그만큼 유산 설명은 유산 해석 과정에 있어 가장 중요한 요소를 가지고 있다. 유산이 올바른 사회적 역할을 수행하기 위해서는 포용적인 유산 해석을 전제로 한 유산 설명이 이루어져야 가능하다는 점에서 본 연구는 박물관이 공공 문화 교육 기관으로서 그간 어떠한 유산 해석과 설명의 방식을 택하고, 발전해왔는지를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 유산 해석과 설명의 정의를 심도 있게 다루고, 이에 따른 박물관 내 유산 설명의 발전과정을 살펴보았다.

A museum is a representative organization implements heritage presentation. As the field of heritage interpretation has changed from a modern perspective to an inclusive perspective, museums have also played a social role with inclusion as a core value. Heritage interpretation is “an activity that recognizes the diverse values of heritage and selects representative value(s) with specific intention,” and heritage presentation can be defined as “any activity that formalizes representative value(s) of heritage derived as a result of heritage interpretation.” No matter how carefully and strategically planned cultural heritage interpretation, that is, well-established heritage interpretation, means that heritage interpretation cannot be completed unless the heritage presentation, which is communication with the public, is properly conducted. As such, heritage presentation has the most important element in the heritage interpretation process. In order for heritage to play the right social role, this study analyzed what heritage interpretation and presentation methods museums have chosen and developed as public cultural education institutions. To this end, the definition of heritage interpretation and presentation was dealt with in depth, and the development process of the museum's heritage presentation was examined accordingly.
