초가지붕 지새미의 유형과 환경․문화적 배경 분석

본 글은 초가지붕의 지새미의 유형과 환경․문화적 배경에 대한 고찰이다. 지새미는 전라도 지역의 처마를 의미하는 사투리이다. 하지만 일반적인 처마의 외형과 구조가 다르기 때문에 유형과 기능을 조사하였다. 이 과정에서 유형과 기능을 통합할 수 있는 단어로 ‘지새미’를 선택하였다. 지새미는 세 가지 유형으로 구분해 볼 수 있었다. 첫째는 장대로 처마 부분의 이엉을 누르는 방식이다. 둘째는 처마 부분에서 이엉을 뒤집어서 인 뒤에 이엉이기를 하는 방식이다. 셋째는 별도의 설치물을 처마에 걸치는 방식이다. 위의 세 가지 유형은 처마 부분의 지붕 두께와 물매를 유지하기 위한 초가지붕의 구조이자 방식이다. 지새미라는 용어의 이용과 유형의 분류는 초가지붕 이엉이기의 전승에 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다. ‘경관을 유지하는 기술’이라는 인식으로부터 ‘초가건물의 보존을 위해 지붕의 두께와 물매를 유지하는 기술’로 재평가 되어야 한다. 현시점에서 이엉이기의 연구는 기록적인 측면에서는 마지막 시기에 해당하면서, 앞으로는 계속 연구되어야 하는 분야라고 생각한다. 즉 이엉이기를 올바르게 전승하기 위해서는 결국 현실적인 문제를 고려하지 않을 수밖에 없다. 지새미에 대한 연구도 이와 같은 생각을 바탕으로 하고 있다.

This article is a reflection on the type of thatched roof jisami and its environmental and cultural background. Jisaemi is a dialect meaning the eaves of the Jeolla-do region. However, since the appearance and structure of the general eaves are different, the types and functions were investigated. In this process, ‘Jisaemi’ was selected as a word that can integrate type and function. Jisaemi could be classified into three types. The first is to press the thatch of the eaves with a pole. Second, turn the thatch upside down at the eaves. Third, a separate installation is hung over the eaves. The above three types are the structures and methods of thatched roofs to maintain the thickness and swell of the eaves. It is expected that the use of the term Jisaemi and the classification of types will be helpful in the transmission of thatched roof technology. It should be reevaluated from the perception of ‘technology for maintaining the landscape’ to ‘the technique of maintaining the thickness and seal of the roof for the preservation of thatched buildings’. At present, research on thatched roof technology is in the last period in terms of records, and I think that it is a field that needs to be continuously studied in the future. In other words, in order to transmit the thatched roof technology correctly, we have no choice but to consider practical issues. The study of Ji Saemi is based on the same idea.
