淸虛 休靜의 佛敎史的 價値

護國과 護法을 중심으로

청허 휴정의 위상과 가치는 조선불교사에서 머물지 않고 한국불교사에서 평가해야 한다. 조선의 불교는 건국 직후부터 탄압을 받고, 승려의 가치나 기능은 쓸모없는 것으로 인식되었다. 임진왜란은 이와 같은 불교와 승려에 대한 부정적 인식을 다시 생각하게 하는 계기가 되었다. 청허 휴정은 승려가 국난극복에 앞장서게 했을 뿐만 아니라, 폐허가 된 불교를 다시 일으켜 세우는데 구심점 역할을 한 것이다. 임진왜란 당시 조직된 승군은 이후 국방과 사회경제적 측면에서 중요한 역할을 담당하였다. 청허는 불교의 근간인 선교학의 정체성을 확립하였고, 그 갈등을 통합으로 조정하기도 하였다. 더욱이 염불 역시 승려들의 수행과 교육과정으로 확정하여 수행과 교화의 범위를 넓히기도 하였다. 이와 같은 조선불교의 기초는 편양 언기와 같은 그의 제자들에 의해서 확산되어갔다. 대흥사는 청허 휴정의 불교중흥을 위한 노력과 정신이 계승되고 있는 곳이다.

The status and value of Ch’ǒnghǒ Hyuchǒng (淸虛休靜) should not remain in Chosun Buddhism, but should be evaluated in Korean Buddhism. Buddhism in Joseon was oppressed right after the founding of the country, and the values and functions of monks were recognized as useless. The Imjin War served as an opportunity to rethink the negative perception of Buddhism and monks. Ch’ǒnghǒ Hyuchǒng (淸 虛休靜) not only helped monks take the lead in overcoming the national crisis, but also played a pivotal role in bringing up ruined Buddhism. During the Imjin War, the organized buddhist army played an important role in national defense and socio-economic aspects. Ch’ǒnghǒ established the identity of Zen and Non-zen Buddhism, which is the basis of Buddhism, and adjusted the conflict to unity. Moreover, Buddhānussati was also confirmed as the monks' training and curriculum to expand the scope of practice and edification. This foundation of Chosun Buddhism was spread by his disciples like Pyeonyang Unkee Daeheung Temple is a place where the spirit and effort for the revival of Buddhism in the retreat of Ch’ǒnghǒ Hyuchǒng (淸虛休靜) is inherited.
