성호학파 내 일군의 학자들은 칠정 중에도 사단처럼 성명에서 발현된 칠정 이 있다고 주장하며 칠정 자체의 도덕성을 논하였다. 그들은 리와 기로 감정을 분 속하여 사단과 칠정을 구분하던 기존의 논의 방식에서 벗어나, 공과 사를 기준으로 감정을 구분하였고 공칠정리발설을 기존의 사칠논변을 보완하는 설로 제시하기에 이른다. 현대적 관점에서 공칠정 담론은 우리의 일상적 감정에도 도덕적 판단이 포 함되어 있음을 논의한 감정론과 유사하다. 이러한 관점에 기초하여 이 글은 누스바 움의 인지주의 감정이론을 살펴보고 그 내용을 활용하여 공칠정 담론에 포함된 가 치 판단, 믿음 등은 무엇인지 드러낸다. 성호학파의 공칠정 담론에 담긴 인지적 요 소를 확인함으로써 그것이 오늘날 우리 사회에 유의미한 시사점을 제공하고 있음을 밝히고, 그에 대한 현대적 해석의 필요성을 밝히는 것이 이 글의 목표이다.
A group of scholars in Seongho School argued that there are seven feelings that get manifested from seongmyeong like four clues, and discussed the morality of seven feelings itself. Their approach to discuss four clues and seven feelings changed to classifying emotions under li and ki. Alternatively, they presented gongchiljeonglibalseol as an independent theory to supplement the existing four-seven debate, and it categorizes emotions based on public and private. From the modern perspective, the discourse on seven public feelings corresponds to the contemporary theory of emotion that debates that our daily emotions involve moral judgments. Based on this point of view, this article analyzes Martha Nussbaum’s cognitivism to reveal what judgments, beliefs, etc. are premised in Seongho School’s discussion. The goal of this writing is to identify the cognitive elements of Seongho School’s discourse of seven public feelings 1) to reveal that it provides meaningful implications for our society today and 2) to appeal for the need for a modern interpretation of the discourse.
