한국 신종교에 나타난 세계시민 의식: 원불교 사상을 중심으로

Global Citizenship in Korean New Religions: Focusing on Won Buddhism

연구 목적 본 연구의 목적은 원불교 사상에서 세계시민 의식을 찾아보는 데 있다. 연구 내용 본 연구에서는 원불교 초기 사상을 중심으로 세계시민 의식의 단초를 찾는다. 먼저 원불교의 창시자인 소태산이 제시한 사상의 특징으로 ‘간단한 교리’와 ‘편리한 방법’에 대해 알아보고, 이 중 세계시민 의식과 관련되는 교리적 근거를 고찰한다. 이를 통해 원불교적 세계시민 의식을 이해할 수 있는 주요 개념으로 공익심(公益心), 공도자(公道者), 공도자 숭배(公道者 崇拜), 무아봉공(無我奉公)을 살펴본다. 결론 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 원불교 사상의 핵심 키워드인 ‘공익심’은 ‘제불제성의 본의’로서 원불교의 세계시민 의식을 나타낸다. 둘째, 공익심을 실현하는 사람을 ‘공도자’라고 부르며 이는 원불교에서 주장하는 ‘세계시민’이라 할 수 있다. 셋째, 공도자 숭배는 원불교의 정신을 실현하는 세계시민 교육이라 할 수 있다.

PURPOSE This study aims to examine global citizenship in Won Buddhism. CONTENTS To accomplish this, the paper investigates the origins of global citizenship by focusing on early Won Buddhist thought. First, as a feature of Won Buddhist thought, the study examines the simple doctrines and practical methods suggested by Sotaesan, the Founding Master of Won Buddhism, and identifies the doctrinal basis pertaining to global citizenship. This enables us to comprehend Won Buddhism’s global citizenship by examining the concepts of Public Spirit, The Public Spirited, Venerating the Public Spirited, and Selfless Service to the Public. RESULTS The study’s findings are as follows. First, the central keyword of Won Buddhism's thought, Public Spirit, can be viewed as the original intent of all the buddhas and sages, symbolizing the global citizenship of Won Buddhism. Second, in Won-Buddhism, those who realize the Public Spirit are The Public Spirited and can be recognized as global citizens. Third, Venerating the Public Spirited can be said to be the global citizenship education in Won Buddhism.
