니까야에 나타난 업설(業說) 고찰: 업설의 용례와 유형

A Study on Karma Theory in Nikāya: Focusing on the Usage and Types of Karma Theory

연구 목적 본 논문은 니까야에 나타난 업설의 용례와 유형에 대한 고찰을 통해 업설의 진정한 의미를 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 불교의 업설은 과거 행위가 현재에 영향을 미친다는 점에서 종종 운명론이라는 주장이 있으므로 업설에 대한 분석을 통해 이를 고찰하고자 한다. 연구 내용 니까야에 나타난 대표적인 업설은 과거의 행위로 인해 현재의 업보를 받는다는 것이다. 불교에서 업보는 인과법을 대표하는데, 후대 불교에서는 지옥에 떨어지는 등의 과보를 업의 결과라고 본다. 본고에서는 초기불전인 니까야 중 붓다의 업에 대한 교설을 중심으로 업의 정의와 용례 등을 유형별로 분석하였다. 니까야의 업설은 세부적으로 12가지 용례로 정리되며, 이는 업과 과보, 업의 소멸, 업과 행위, 업의 결정론 부정 등 4가지 유형으로 정리할 수 있다. 업과 과보에 대한 내용은 다른 인도의 종교 및 학파와 유사한 면도 있지만, 업의 결정론적 성격을 부정하고 행위를 통해 업의 정화가 가능하다는 내용은 기존 업설에 붓다가 의도(cetanā)를 부가하면서 수정한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 본고에서는 붓다가 업의 본질을 행위에 앞선 의도라고 풀이함으로써 업을 형이상학적 문제가 아닌 윤리적 문제로 환원한 측면이 있다고 파악하였다. 결론 불교의 업설은 운명론적 성격보다는 윤리적 측면에서 행위를 규제하고 정화하여 열반을 지향하고자 하는 성격이 강하다고 할 수 있다.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study to examine the types of Buddhist karmic theories appearing in Nikāya and to examine their meanings. There is often an argument that karma is fatalism, so I will examine this through analysis of the theory of karma. CONTENTS One of karma theory in Nikāya is that one receives current karma due to past actions. In this paper, the definition of karma and examples of karma are analyzed by type, focusing on the Buddha's teachings on karma in the early Buddhist scriptures, Nikāya. The karma theory of Nikāya is organized in detail into 12 examples, which can be organized into 4 types: karma and result, cessation of karma, karma and action, and denial of determinism. The content of denying the deterministic nature of karma and that it is possible to purify karma through action can be seen as a modification made by the Buddha by adding intention(cetanā) to the existing karma theory. In this paper, it is understood that there is an aspect in which Buddha reduced karma to an ethical problem by interpreting the essence of karma as an intention that precedes an action. RESULTS The Buddhist doctrine of karma aim for nirvana by regulating and purifying behavior in the ethical aspect rather than fatalism.
