The Idea of Public Education: In View of Aristotle’s Politics

아리스토텔레스의 ｢정치학｣은 국가가 법을 통하여 관장하는 공교육을 주창한 논서로 알려져 있다. 이 글에서 필자는 ｢정치학｣에 제시되어 있는 그의 주장이 오늘날 공교육이 처한 위기상황에 주는 시사점을 고찰하고자 하였다. 18~19세기에 등장한 근대적 모델의 공교육은 사회적 불평등의 해소와 경제적 번영이라는 두 가지 동인에 의하여 생겨나고 발달하였지만, 그 두 가지 ‘사회적 적합성’의 논거는 그때부터 지금에 이르기까지 지속적인 비판과 회의의 대상이 되고 있다. 아리스토텔레스가 공교육의 목적으로 제시하는 ‘여가’와 ‘관조적 삶’은 ‘사회적 적합성’과는 다른 차원의 공공성이 있을 수 있다는 점을 보여준다. 사회적 적합성이 공교육의 현실적 측면을 보여준다면, ‘삶의 기준’에 해당하는 여가나 관조적 삶은 공교육의 이념적 측면을 보여준다. 오늘날 공교육에 대한 비판과 회의는 대부분 사회적 적합성의 차원에서 논의되고 있지만, 이것은 공교육의 가지는 또 다른 성격을 간과하는 결과를 초래한다. 이른바 ‘시민적 공공성’으로 대표되는 오늘날의 정치적 상황은 교육과 정치의 밀접한 관련을 시사하지만, 또 한편으로, 공교육의 이념적 측면이 현실의 삶에서 실현되기가 어렵다는 점을 시사한다.

Aristotle's Politics is known as a treatise that advocated public education governed by the state through law. In this paper, I tried to examine the implications of his arguments presented in it for the crisis situation of public education today. The modern model of public education that emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries, was created and developed by two social drivers, i.e., the resolving of social inequality and realizing economic growth. But from then to now, these two drivers that belong to the ‘social relevance’ have been the subject of continuous criticism and skepticism. The ‘schole(leisure)’ and ‘contemplative life’ that Aristotle presented as the purpose of public education show that there can be another dimension of ‘publicity’. If social relevance shows the realistic aspect of public education, ‘schole’ or ‘contemplative life’, which means the 'standard of life', shows the ideal aspect of public education. Criticism and skepticism about public education today are mostly discussed in terms of social relevance, but this results in overlooking the ideal aspect of public education. Today's political situation, represented by the so-called ‘civil publicity’ suggests a close relationship between education and politics, but on the other hand, it suggests that the ideal aspect of public education is easily overlooked.
