동물윤리 수업과 우리 도덕교육에서 고려해 봐야 할 문제들

Issues to be Considered in Our Moral Education through Animal Ethics Classes

동물의 도덕적 지위는 응용윤리에서 다루는 주제 중 가장 흥미로운 것 중 하나다. 필자가 이렇게 말하는 이유는 이 주제가 한편으로는 우리의 식습관에 정면으로 도전을 하고 있기 때문이며, 다른 한편으로는 우리의 사고를 반성적으로 검토할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 때문이다. 도덕교육에 관심을 갖는 사람의 입장에서 보았을 때 동물윤리는 우리나라의 어린이와 청소년들이 대학을 입학하기 전까지 도덕수업을 어떻게 받았는지를 미루어 짐작케 한다는 점에서도 흥미롭다. 이 글에서 필자는 동물윤리 수업을 하다 보면 대학생들이 도덕의 특징을 적절히 파악하고 있는 경우가 많지 않으며, 칸트의 의무론과 공리주의로 대표되는 보편적 도덕 원리의 중요성을 의식하지 못하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다고 주장하고 있다. 또한 그들이 정확한 사실 파악이 어렵다는 점을 의식하지 못하며, 논리를 전개할 때 자신들과 무관한 문제들에 대해서는 객관적인 입장을 견지하지만 자신들의 이익과 결부된 문제에 대해서는 아전인수(我田引水)격으로 논리를 개진하는 경우가 적지 않음을 살펴볼 수 있다고 주장하고 있다. 도덕교육을 담당하는 사람들은 이러한 문제들에 대한 해결 방안을 어떻게 관련 교육에 적절히 녹여낼 수 있을지를 고민해 볼 필요가 있을 것이다.

Moral status of animal is one of the most interesting topics dealt with in applied ethics. The reason is that on the one hand, this topic is directly challenging our eating habits, and on the other hand, this topic provides an opportunity to reflect on our thinking. From the perspective of those who are interested in moral education, animal ethics is also interesting in that it suggests how children and teenagers in Korea received moral classes before entering university. In this article, I argue that in animal ethics classes, university students do not often properly grasp the characteristics of morality, and they are not aware of the importance of universal moral principles represented by Kant's theory of duty and utilitarianism. It is also argued that students do not know how it is difficult to accurately grasp the facts, and that they maintain an objective position on issues unrelated to them when developing logic, but they often express logic in a child-in-law manner on issues related to their interests. Those in charge of moral education should consider how to properly integrate solutions to these problems into related education.
