대학의 사회적 책임에 대한 역사적 고찰

A Historical Review on the Social Responsibility of Universities: Focusing on Meaning Reflections based on John Dewey's Philosophy of Experience

연구목적: 본 연구는 대학의 사회적 책임에 대한 개념을 역사적으로 고찰해 봄으로써 현재 대학 교육의 본질과 대학의 사회적 책임의 의미를 교육 철학적으로 음미해 보는 데 목적이 있다. 연구방법: 이를 위해, 2장에서는 고대부터 현대에 이르기까지 대학의 사명과 역할이 어떻게 변화해왔는지를 고찰하고, 3장에서는 최근의 대학의 사회적 책임 실천 양상을 살펴봄으로써 대학의 본질과 사회적 책임의 내용을 확인하며, 마지막으로 존 듀이의 철학에 기반하여 대학의 사회적 책임의 의미를 음미해 본다. 연구결과: 대학은 사회 환경의 영향에 따라 필요에 의해 생겨나 시대적 요청에 의한 책무를 받아들이고 실천에 옮겨 온 역사성을 가지며, 그 기능은 교육, 연구, 봉사의 세 가지로 요약됨을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 듀이의 경험철학에 기반하면 교육과 연구, 봉사의 기능은 그 자체로 대학의 본질이며 사회적 책임의 요소가 된다. 논의 및 결론: 따라서 대학의 사회적 책임 실천은 변화하는 사회 환경을 민감하게 살피는 가운데 대학의 기본적인 기능인 교육과 연구, 봉사에 충실함으로써 시작되며, 이것은 사회 변화에 대처하는 교육 혁신의 근본이다.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the concept of social responsibility of universities historically and to philosophically appreciate the essence of university education and the meaning of social responsibility of universities today. Method: To this end, Chapter 2 examines how the mission and role of universities have changed from ancient times to modern times, Chapter 3 examines recent aspects of university social responsibility practices to identify the nature and content of social responsibility. Then, this study finally examines the meaning of university social responsibility based on John Dewey's philosophy. Results: The university has a historicity that arises out of necessity under the influence of the social environment, accepts the responsibilities of the times, and puts them into practice. And it could be seen that the functions of the university were summarized in three ways: teaching, research, and service. Based on Dewey's philosophy of experience, the functions of teaching, research, and service are themselves the essence of the university and an element of social responsibility. Conclusion: Therefore, the university's practice of social responsibility begins by being sensitive to the changing social environment and adhering to the basic functions of the university, namely teaching, research, and service, which is fundamental to educational innovation in response to social changes.
