육영공원(育英公院) 입원생의 사회적 배경과 입원 동기

Analysis of the Social Background and Factors that Motivate the Admission of Students to the Royal Academy

이 글에서는 육영공원 입원생의 사회적 배경을 통해 전통사회에서 새로운 사회로 이행하는 과도기에 새로운 학교에 진학한 인물들을 유형화하여 이들의 입학동기를 직·간접적으로 드러내고자 하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫 번째, 육영공원 좌원생은 대체로 문과에 합격하여 육영공원 입원 전후에 전형적인 문관에 해당하는 관직을 수행하는 한편 육영공원 우원생은 문과, 소과, 잡과 등에 합격하였고, 육영공원 입원 이후에 문관 및 신제관료로 진출하는 등 다양한 이력을 가진 것을 알 수 있었다. 두 번째, 육영공원 좌원생은 문과 출신 문관의 자제가 전체 인원의 70%로 대체로 동질한 집단이었다. 육영공원 우원생은 비교적 다양한 사회적 배경을 가졌으나 문과 출신 문관의 자제와 신제관료의 자제가 각각 전체 인원의 9.4%로 가장 많은 인원이 해당되었다. 세 번째, 육영공원 입원생의 개인정보와 부친정보 등을 고려하여 ‘1유형: 좌원생으로 입원하여 좌원으로 감하한 인물들’, ‘2유형: 우원생으로 입원한 이후 좌원생으로 승원한 인물들’, ‘3유형: 우원생으로 문과에 합격하였으나 좌원생으로 승원하지 않은 인물들’, ‘4유형: 우원생 중 기술관 가계 출신 인물들’ 등 4가지로 유형화할 수 있었다. 1유형부터 3유형까지 해당하는 인물들은 새로운 교육기관을 통해 대체로 고위 관료로의 진출 가능성을 선점하고자 하였고, 4유형의 인물들은 가계의 가업과 재능을 활용하여 기술관 이외에 더 다양한 범주의 진로를 모색하고자 했다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

In this article, the characters who went to new schools during the transition from traditional society to a new society were categorized by their social backgrounds, thereby revealing their motivation for admission. Considering students’ personal and father’s information provided at the Royal Academy, they were divided into four types. Type 1: People who entered the upper class and graduated from the upper class; Type 2: People who were promoted to the upper class since entering the lower class; Type 3: People who passed the test to the lower class but were not promoted to the upper class; and Type 4: People from the government experts’ families. It was found that people of Types 1 to 3 tried to occupy the category of entering as high-ranking bureaucrats in advance through the new educational institutions, while Type 4 tried to explore more diverse career paths other than technicians by utilizing household businesses and talent.
