In the 19th century, the leaders of overseas Chinese organizations in Singapore and Malaysia exercised influence in the local Chinese society under the acquiescence of the British colonial government. It can be said that these overseas Chinese leaders were in a very special position. The British colonial government also gave special treatment to the leaders of these overseas Chinese organizations. In other words, they took an attitude that tolerated the special status of the leaders of overseas Chinese organizations. That is why, during the Singapore Uprising in the middle of the 19th century, the British colonial government asked the leaders of overseas Chinese organizations to mediate the riot. As a result, when the leaders of the Overseas Chinese organization intervened, the riot soon calmed down. These examples show the influence and power of the leaders of overseas Chinese organizations. In this article, we will analyze the leaders of these 19th-century Singaporean and Malaysian overseas Chinese organizations.
