고등학생의 통계적 사고 양상 조사

Examining High-School Students’ Statistical Thinking

우리나라 고등학생의 통계적 사고 과정 양상을 알아보고자 한다. 이를 위해 통계적 사고를 파악할 수 있는 검사 도구를 개발하여 고등학생 165명을 대상으로 검사를 시행하여 학생 응답 자료를 수집하고 질적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 학생들은 통계자료를 분석하는 과정에서 자료의 구체적 수치들을 활용하여 요약하거나 표현하지 않고 표나 그래프 일부분만으로 자료의 특징과 추세를 판단하는 경향성이 높았다. 둘째, 학생들은 주어진 통계자료로 알 수 있는 사실을 문제의 맥락과 연결하여 추론하기보다는 자료와 관계없이 맥락만을 서술하는 경향을 나타냈다. 셋째, 자료에 내재한 변동성을 인식하는 과정에서는 분포의 모양이나 형태에 주목하지 않으며 표본의 크기나 불확실성을 고려하지 않고 단정 짓는 표현을 주로 사용하는 것으로 나타났다.

This study aims to examine high-school students’ statistical thinking processes and identify any constructs for statistical reasoning. For that purpose, we developed and administered a six-item questionnaire to 165 high-school students. The data analysis suggests as follows: a) the students seem to analyze given data by partly taking up data of tables or graphs without considering numerical data collectively, b) the students appear not to consider the problem context in analyzing and interpreting data given, and c) in regards to the variability of data set, the students show tendency to not consider shapes of distributions, the size of samples, or uncertainties in making statistical inferences.
