한반도 주둔 일본 해군의 제주항공기지 운용과 특징

Construction and Characteristics of the Japanese Navy’s Jeju Air Base during the Japanese colonial period

아시아태평양전쟁 말기 제주도에는 일본 육군과 해군이 건설한 총 4곳의 항공기지가 있었다. 이중 제주도 남서쪽 모슬포 연안에 있었던 제주항공기지는 일본 해군이 1930년대 초반부터 건설한 것이다. 제주항공기지는 중일전쟁기 남경공습을 비롯한 중국 침략의 기점이 되었다. 제주항공기지를 출발한 비행기의 공습으로 인해 중국은 물론이고 그곳에 자리하고 있던 대한민국 임시정부 요인과 우리 동포들도 피해를 입었다. 제주항공기지는 일본 열도에서 중국으로 가는 길목에 위치한 탓에 지정학적으로 매우 중요한 위상을 가졌다. 이러한 중요성은 중일전쟁을 지나 아시아태평양전쟁기에 더욱 부각되었다. 특히 1944년 말 이후 미군의 제주도 공격이 임박하자 미군 상륙과 공습을 방어하기 위한 군사시설이 확충되었다. 일본 해군은 침략전쟁을 위해 제주에 항공기지를 건설하고 중국 침략에 활용했다. 또한 종전 직전에는 미군의 상륙에 대비한 결전용 시설을 설치하여 식민지 조선인들에게 수많은 피해를 야기할 가능성이 있었다. 제주에는 아직도 10기 이상의 엄체를 비롯하여 지하벙커와 특공용 지하시설 등이 다수 남아 있다.

At the end of the Asia-Pacific War, Jeju Island had a total of four air bases built by the Japanese Army and Navy. Among them, the Japanese Navy has built an air base on the coast of Moseulpo southwest of Jeju since the early 1930s. Jeju Air Base became the starting point of Chinese invasion, including the attack on Nanjing during the Second Sino-Japanese War. When the plane departing from Jeju attacked Nanjing, Korean compatriots, including the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, lived there. Jeju Air Base has a very important geopolitical status because it is located on the road from the Japanese archipelago to China. This importance was further highlighted during the Asia-Pacific War after the Sino-Japanese War. In particular, after the end of 1944, when the U.S. military’s attack on Jeju Island was imminent, military facilities were expanded to defend against U.S. landings and air strikes. The Japanese Navy built an air base in Jeju for the war of aggression and used it to invade China. In addition, special attack facilities were installed in preparation for the landing of the U.S. military just before the end of the war, almost causing numerous damage to colonial Koreans. Jeju still has underground bunkers and special attack underground facilities, including 10 air shelters.
